At the far northwest corner of San Francisco, the city simply falls away into cliffs, cypress trees, and open ocean. The Land’s End Trail is a short walk in the city, but also one of the most dramatic, packing coastal views, history, and art into just over two miles. I recommend walking west to east to get the best views of the Golden Gate.

The route begins near Point Lobos Avenue, where the sound of waves crashing below sets the tone immediately. A short descent toward the iconic ruins of the Sutro Baths is certainly worth it: once a grand public bathhouse and now one of San Francisco’s most atmospheric sites. Standing above the crumbling foundations with the Pacific stretching endlessly beyond, it’s easy to imagine the grandeur that once stood here.

From there, the trail joins the Coastal Trail, winding east along the cliffs. This is where the walk truly shines. The path weaves through wind-shaped cypress trees, opening again and again to sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands, and the rugged shoreline below. At Eagle’s Point Overlook and the North Observation Deck, the vistas are especially striking with waves rolling in and seabirds gliding overhead. Depending on the weather, the bridge emerges through the fog, is completely hidden, or seems to sparkle in the sunlight.

As the trail curves inland, it leads toward the stately grounds of the Legion of Honor. Here, art blends seamlessly with the landscape. Sculptures like The Thinker, El Cid Campeador, and Jeanne d’Arc stand among manicured lawns, offering a striking contrast to the rugged coastline just behind you.

The walk ends near the Legion of Honor museum, where ocean views give way to quiet reflection. If sculpture is your thing, enjoy the museum’s large Rodin collection. Or perhaps continue your hike on the Batteries to Bluffs trail.

The hike does have a bit of an elevation, but shouldn’t be too tough even for the hiking novices out there.
